Real influence matters
Under commission from the London Empowerment Partnership, and in partnership with Micah Gold Associates, TCC has completed a groundbreaking programme of qualitative research into London residents' perceptions of their influence on local decision-making, with in-depth study conducted in partnership with Barking and Dagenham, Barnet, Hounslow and Tower Hamlets. The research report exposes major disparities between the perceptions of the public and of institutions, and of different sections of the public, around community engagement and involvement. Drawing on the Values Modes framework, stakeholder interviews and public discussion groups, TCC recommend possible ways forward for councils to understand residents’ motivations and expectations, create the internal culture change needed to build trust and harness the power of personal experience, word-of-mouth and peer-to-peer networks to disseminate messages and gather information in authentic ways.

As part of this research, TCC held a free conference on Tuesday 29th June 2010 at Toynbee Hall, London. The conference was a great success, with representation from the majority of London boroughs as well as attendees from think tanks, government agencies and third sector organisations. The conference was opened by Phillip Blond, Director of ResPublica, with an intriguing speech on the Big Society, and also featured presentations from Pat Dade of Cultural Dynamics ; Anna Pierce and Andy Byrom of Ipsos MORI
You can listen to the audio recording of Phillip’s speech on the right hand side of the page and read some excerpts in this blog post. You can also download all the slides from the presentations made on the day below.
