Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
All NHS foundation trusts have elected governors, chosen by the members to represent their views to the trust managers. Having elected its new governors, Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust wanted to make sure that they were confident and happy in their new roles, so they commissioned The Campaign Company to run three governor training workshops.
TCC had been working with the Trust from the beginning of their membership development programme, so we knew what sort of approaches would work for them. We first ran a thorough training needs analysis on the new governors to find out what they wanted to get out of the training. We then invited the governors to day-long workshops, each with a maximum of fifteen people. These included discussions how the governors would like to work with the Trust, the different roles of the governors, and a session on team development.
As a result of our training, the governors have been able to play a much stronger role in the Trust, representing the views of members to the hospital board and contributing to engagement processes. During the course of the day, they also decided which of the hospital's working groups they would like to be part of, enabling them to contribute to issues which are particularly important to them.
What the governors said
- 'A thoroughly enjoyable day'
- 'The workshop was well planned and presented and catered for all levels of understanding of the role'
- 'Both trainers were excellent communicators and worked well at keeping everyone on track'
