NHS Nottinghamshire County – communication and engagement audit

NHS Nottinghamshire County asked us to audit its communication and engagement as part of its development as a World Class Commissioner. The organisation wanted to see how its current communications were working, profile its stakeholders, and ensure that its key messages were clear and consistent.

We used a range of techniques to ensure that the PCT had the information it needed:

  • Communications benchmarking research
  • Depth interviews with 20 key stakeholders – exploring key issues around engagement methods
  • Focus groups – to determine priorities and consider how people would like to hear from the PCT
  • Telephone survey of 1000 members of the public – to add detailed demographic breakdowns to our focus group finding
  • Facilitated discussions with the commissioner and provider teams – finding out about staff perceptions of the PCT and its priorities

Our suggestions for the PCT included staff training, narrative development, and building a network of local advocates to act as a sounding board for future engagement and consultation. This network could also act as early adopters as part of a wider movement to promote healthy lifestyles.

Our client's view

We commissioned The Campaign Company to conduct a wide-ranging communications audit for NHS Nottinghamshire County. The company was thorough and responsive to our needs. The insight provided by their final report has led to specific actions which should improve our communications and stakeholder engagement.
