Young Mayor 2009
Last weekend, TCC ran training days for this year's Young Mayor candidates in the London Boroughs of Lewisham and Newham. With previous young mayors and advisors on hand to help, the candidates found out how the elections work, recorded video manifestos, and are ready to run their campaigns for elections at the end of October. Both young mayor schemes go from strength to strength, with turnout amongst young people who live, work or study in the area at almost 50 per cent last year. Each young mayor has a budget to spend on activities for young people, and can also advise the adult mayor and council on policies which affect young people. The Newham training was recorded by a team from the BBC, who are making a documentary for CBBC about young mayors around the UK.
