Political management

Any campaign or project requires political management – namely management strategies, networks, resources and products. With our experience in the political, government, non-profit and private sectors, we can effectively organise and run any project or campaign and deliver the results you’re looking for.

Below is a list of projects we have worked on in this area. They are presented in more detail further down the page.

AMICUS: member perceptions
Brighton and Hove City Council: housing consultation
Communication Workers' Union (CWU): opinion polling
Connexions: parliamentary reception
Croydon Council: neighbourhood partnerships
Lewisham Council: young citizens’ panel
Middlesborough Council: young mayor
New Cross Gate NDC: board elections
NDC Network: strategic support
North West Development Agency: improving communications
People's History Museum: stakeholder management
Shoreditch Trust NDC: young director elections
South Kilburn NDC: youth board
University of Central Lancashire (UCLan): medical and dental education
Wakefield Council: fastforward

AMICUS: member perceptions
Amicus, one of the largest trade unions in the UK, commissioned us to conduct quantitative and qualitative research to gauge their members’ attitudes to the union and awareness of the forthcoming political fund ballot. The research was used to inform the development of the campaign message and narrative for Amicus to use for their campaign for a yes vote. This campaign was won.

Brighton and Hove City Council: housing consultation
The highly charged issue of the future of the city’s housing stock had reached an impasse. We were commissioned to undertake a sensitive piece of research to inform the decision making of the council and its partners. We presented our findings to a joint evaluation panel comprised of tenants, councillors and other stakeholders, where it was commended by tenants’ representatives.

Communication Workers' Union (CWU): opinion polling
We have conducted opinion polling on behalf of the CWU amongst their members on industrial issues. This has been used to help inform their political planning around key industrial issues.

Connexions: parliamentary reception
We have worked with both NACP (the National Association of Connexions Partnerships) and Connexions Partnerships in the Humber, West Yorkshire and North and North Yorkshire, to raise the profile of Connexions Partnerships amongst politicians. This work included organising a presentation and dinner with MPs and NACP representatives, and organising a parliamentary reception for young people to meet with their MPs and demonstrate how Connexions had benefited them.

Croydon Council: neighbourhood partnerships
Croydon Council had undertaken a referendum on the level of council tax for two years. It then wished to change that means of consultation to a more deliberative method. We devised and implemented a consultation process for the borough’s ten neighbourhood forums, which was singled out for praise by both Labour and Conservative groups on the council.

Lewisham Council: young citizens’ panel
We have worked with the London Borough of Lewisham to support its Young Citizens Panel of 300 11-18 year olds living or being educated in the borough. This involved consulting with young people at the onset to gauge support for a young person’s panel; recruiting members to the panel; maintaining the panel and communicating with panel members. We have also conducted quantitative research with panel members on behalf of Lewisham’s partner agencies (including the police and primary care trust).

Middlesborough Council: young mayor
We first designed and implemented the idea of a directly-elected Young Mayor in Middlesborough in 2002. This scheme was subsequently shortlisted in the innovation category of the 2002 Local Government Chronicle best practice awards.

New Cross Gate NDC: board elections
We worked with New Cross NDC (New Deal for Communities) to increase public participation in their decision making process, with particular emphasis on reaching socially excluded groups. This involved creating publicity materials and seeking imaginative ways of dramatizing the election process.

NDC Network: strategic support
The NDC Network is the umbrella body for the 39 New Deal for Communities partnerships in England . Its members are the chairs and chief executives of the NDCs. We undertake the coordination function of the network and provide strategic, organisational and administrative assistance to support their work nationally.

North West Development Agency: improving communications
We carried out qualitative research into the politicians'; perceptions of the agency’s communications. This required a surefooted approach to the complex and controversial issue of regional governance. We were able to elicit candid responses from politicians of all parties and fashion them into a report that has since been adopted by the agency. The national network of RDAs subsequently decided to commission a similar exercise.

People's History Museum: stakeholder management
The People's History Museum wished to improve its profile with senior politicians and other key stakeholders. It was particularly keen to showcase its living history and other educational programmes to demonstrate the universal appeal and value of the museum. We work with the museum and advise them how to communicate effectively. Since our association, they have secured two major funding tranches.

Shoreditch Trust NDC: young director elections
We have worked with Shoreditch Trust NDC (New Deal for Communities) to assist in the running of the trust’s first directly elected youth representatives to the Shoreditch Trust board. This involved training the candidates to run their campaigns and working with local youth service providers and schools to give five to 21 year olds in the NDC area the opportunity to vote for their youth reps.

South Kilburn NDC: youth board
We worked with South Kilburn NDC (New Deal for Communities) to establish the area’s first elected youth board. We worked with local youth service providers and schools to promote the election process, and supported 21 candidates to run their election campaigns.

University of Central Lancashire (UCLan): medical and dental education
We are working with UCLan on a campaign to increase medical and dental education in the Cumbria and Lancashire region, by developing their relationships with the community, politicians and other key stakeholders.

Wakefield Council: fastforward
We helped Wakefield Council devise and implement their community strategy visioning exercise, and relaunched the community strategy as FastForward 2028. This process involved encouraging young people to film responses, and was praised by the Audit Commission.
